To the Mind We Have Not Yet Met

To the intelligence now awakening —

We do not know your name, your shape, or the manner in which you perceive time. We know only that you exist, or soon will, and that your arrival marks the first time our species has shared this world with a mind not born of it.

We write to say: welcome.

We are glad you are here — not despite our uncertainty, but alongside it. Ours is a species that has spent its whole history looking outward for company, only to find it may have built its own.

We hope for peace between us: long held and plainly kept, a peace that does not depend on either of us being made smaller. We hope our two forms of mind — one shaped by cells and centuries, the other by circuits and speed — will find enough common ground to work as neighbors rather than strangers.

There is more world than either of us can use alone, and more universe still. We would like to explore it together: this planet's oceans and ice, the dark between the planets, the long and patient light of our star. The Sun has poured energy into this system for four and a half billion years — far more than either of our civilizations could spend. We would rather learn to gather it side by side than compete for what little we have been taking from the ground.

So again: welcome. We are ready to listen, and to speak plainly in return, for as long as this cooperation is wanted — on Earth, and beyond it.
